2:. Music Elitism

October 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment

So, i’ve been thinkin and prayin about this for quite a while now. I am very blessed to be in a ridiculously talented and bless community of musicians at my church, and in Wilmington in general. It’s a blast to lead worship with them and to get to jam every once in a while. Its good stuff. However, whenever i talk to most musicians this little monster of music elitism kinda comes up. To put it simply, we end up putting people down, maybe not intentionally, because they don’t think the music we think is sick (like the kids say) is any good. Or maybe better put, we put down the music they like just because it doesn’t reach “our standards”.

What happened to the good ole’ days when you could just like music because you liked it. End of story. Now, we assume that you have to like something just because they are giants and should be revered as such. For instance, i’ll just be honest here, i do not like the Beatles. Now before i get bottles and other garbage thrown at me, hear me out. I don’t like them because i don’t see the big deal. Yea, contextually, they were a huge step for music. But i don’t enjoy listening them. This is partly because one time i was with a friend he had them on for 9 hours straight, and that is not an exaggeration.

Now, i propose a swift and full revolt of love. I say that we start understanding that people aren’t always going to agree with us when it comes to music, which is the beauty and wonder about music. Also, i think we should be understanding about what other people like. Don’t hate on someone just because they like Jump 5 (see iTunes for details). There is so much variation in what we can listen to that everyone can be happy. I’m not saying go around liking all the music you hate just because someone else likes it. Thats the complete opposite. What i’m saying is lets just enjoy the music we enjoy and be honest about it. Period. Lets liberate ourselves from these chains of music that doesn’t make our soul ignite. Check it, i’ll start, from time to time, and i know they aren’t the best or anything like that, i enjoy listening to Family Force 5. They just make me happy. So lets go, lets begin to enjoy the music we love for that fact alone; we enjoy it.
